A Modern Classic
This is probably one of the best Evangelical commentaries on the Old Testament written in recent years. Firth eschews the higher critical approach that splits up books (and mars, for example, Klein's Commentary in the Word series), and deals with the books of Samuel as they stand rather than trying to reconstruct their pre-history. As a result he has produced a thoughtful work that engages with the text as a unity. Preaching through 1 Samuel in a small urban church, I have consistntly found this book the most helpful of commentaries.
