John 18: 12-14
12So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.
Peter's Nerve Fails (John 18: 12-14)
Jesus is accused before Annas, the former high priest who still dominated the Jewish religious scene, and then before Caiaphas the current high priest. At this point Peter denies that he knows Jesus.
None of the gospel writers give us a complete picture of the trials of Jesus; therefore we are left with some uncertainties. One uncertainty that we have is because we have little information about Jewish criminal procedure; we don’t know why Jesus was taken before Annas.
Think: Do such ‘uncertainties’ impact our belief in the accuracy of the gospel accounts of the crucifixion?
